(Daily Caller News Foundation) – President Donald Trump said Monday he would be willing to host Chinese President Xi Jinping at Mar-a-Lago after a potential visit to China next year.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One during his East Asia visit, Trump said he would be open to Xi visiting him at his South Florida residence after the potential meeting in China sometime next year. The president has expressed his confidence that a deal can be reached with China to resolve the ongoing trade war.
“We pretty much agreed that I’ll be going to China in the earlier part of the year and President Xi will be coming in to maybe Washington or Palm Beach or some place sometime after that,” he said during the early-morning gaggle.
Trump has so far signed trade deals with Cambodia and Malaysia during his East Asia tour. He’s scheduled to meet Xi in South Korea on Thursday.
China has so far been highly combative in talks with the U.S. regarding its trade policies, but risks losing access to America’s far-superior consumer markets. China relies on exports heavily to prop up its economy.
So far, the Trump administration and China have agreed to a framework for a trade deal before the meeting Thursday, but the finer details are yet to be worked out. Moreover, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent added that additional escalations of tariffs are currently “off the table” due to promising talks with Beijing.
The White House deferred to Trump’s remarks when asked for comment.
