A gunman is in custody after a school shooting left one teen dead and another injured in Arlington, Texas early Monday morning.

At least one male student was shot, and another female student was hit by shrapnel that grazed her cheek, reports local Fox 4 News.

“We prepare for incidents like this, but it is impossible to prepare for the emotion,” said Arlington ISD superintendent Dr. Marcelo Cavazos. “We are heartbroken.”

Arlington police issued a lockdown warning via text and on Twitter around 7:41 a.m.

“This morning, we responded to Lamar High School to investigate a reported shooting that took place outside the school building,” the warning read. “The scene is secure and the suspected shooter is in custody.”

Police were asking students, parents and residents to stay away from the school.

The gunman never made it inside the school, as the shooting happened at 6:55 a.m. and school does not open until after 7:30 a.m.

Police say they took the gunman into custody immediately upon arriving at the school, but no further details about the suspect were released.

Police announced student reunification would begin at 12:00 p.m.

However, some parents started showing up as soon as they heard the news, Fox 4 reports.

“I got a text from the school this morning saying the school was on lockdown,” Normecha Stiger, a parent of a 9th grade student at Arlington Lamar, told the local station.

“I just left work so I could be here, because my son is in there and when you don’t know what’s going on it is worrisome,” she added.
