The Washington Monument was lit up with American history displays at the top of every hour Wednesday night as 2026 approached – America’s 250th birthday year.
“Tonight, we’re illuminating the Washington Monument into America’s BIGGEST birthday candle & SPECTACULAR fireworks as we kick off our Nation’s 250th year,” Freedom 250 wrote in a post on X.

Beginning at 7 p.m., bright scenes were projected depicted, from Christopher Columbus’ discovery of the New World and George Washington crossing the Delaware to the moon landing and more, according to the New York Post. The light show is planned for the first five evenings of January to recognize “the illumination of America,” according to Freedom 250.
“From New Year’s Eve through January 5th, 2026, a six-night projection-mapping spectacle will illuminate the Monument, creating an immersive, luminous canvas that narrates our Nation’s discovery, expansion, independence, and vision for the future,” the website explains.
The best locations for viewing are from the National Mall or the wider perimeter of the Washington Monument Grounds, according to Freedom 250. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the “Washington Monument will glow on New Year’s Eve” to honor America’s 250th anniversary.
“This Washington Monument illumination is the opening signature moment of a year-long series of marquee national events celebrating the triumph of the American spirit,” the website states.
