As the Democratic Party veers to the left, voters are finding it too liberal, new polling shows.
A majority of voters, 58%, said Democrats are too liberal, up from 48% in 2013, a nearly 21% increase.
“A larger point within the Democratic Party is that the far left is significantly more powerful than they once were,” said CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten while discussing the polling results from Gallup Thursday.
The party had a base of conservatives in 1999, a number that has dwindled from 26% to just 8%. At the same time, a third of members identify as democratic socialists, including 42% of members age 35 and under.
Enten said these shifts help explain the rise of Zohran Mamdani in New York City and other socialist candidates, although there could be pushback.
“The far left is gaining power, and there could be some electoral repercussions because what we see right now is voters, the clear majority, say that they are too liberal.”
