Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson, who switched from Democrat to Republican three years ago, credited school choice as one of the reasons people are moving to Texas.

“Texas is a great state, and people are moving with their feet from places like New York, from places like California for education,” Johnson told “Squawk Box” on CNBC on Monday.

“We have wonderful flagship universities,” he continued. “We’ve got wonderful public schools. We’ve got wonderful private schools. Because of our state legislature this last session, we’ve now got school choice in Texas.”

More than 274,000 students applied for Texas Education Freedom Accounts, a $1 billion program that debuts this year.

The Lone Star State leads the U.S. in corporate relocations, which has brought an influx of residents, many of whom have children.

“There are wonderful educational options, and people think about all of those things when they’re trying to decide to move a family,” Johnson said.
