A woman born with a rare brain disorder recently celebrated her 20th birthday – after doctors said she likely wouldn’t make it past 4.
Alex Simpson of Omaha, Nebraska, has a rare condition known as hydranencephaly, meaning she’s missing most of her brain and her cerebellum is “about half the size of my pinky finger,” her father, Shawn, told KETV news.
Although Alex can’t see or hear, family members say she can sense their presence. They also credit love with prolonging her life.
“Twenty years ago, we were scared,” Shawn said, adding that faith and love “is really what kept us alive.”
