It’s called “Alligator Alcatraz,” after the famous San Francisco prison once considered impossible to escape.
“If people get out, there’s not much waiting for them other than alligators and pythons,” Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier says in a video announcing the temporary facility.
Located deep in the Everglades, the nearly abandoned airport will be able to house up to 1,000 detained illegal immigrants once fully operational.
“There’s nowhere to go and nowhere to hide,” Uthmeier says of the remote location.
