Jocky Jose Ortiz’s come-from-behind win at Sunday’s Kentucky Derby was preceded by a Bible verse: Philippians 4:13.
Ortiz, a devout Christian, posted the verse before the race: “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.”
Soon after, he piloted Golden Tempo, a 23-1 long shot, to a stunning victory.
Entering the final turn at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, the horse and jockey were in last place. But Golden Tempo surged down the stretch, and “all things” soon became possible. Ortiz charged to the front of the pack, edging out his brother Irad Ortiz, who rode the favorite, Renegade, by a neck.
Afterward, the married father of three said he couldn’t wait to see his family.
“I’m just blessed,” he said after the race. “I get to ride it almost every year, but to get to win it is just special.
“To have my mom and my dad here today, it’s very special. I just wish that my grandpa was here, but I know he’s looking from heaven,” he said, with tears in his eyes.
The race also made history. Cherie DeVaux, Golden Tempo’s trainer, became the first woman to train a Kentucky Derby winner in the race’s 152-year history.
DeVaux screamed with excitement as Ortiz and Golden Tempo made their move from the back of the pack.
The race was also the most watched in Derby history, NBC said.
