More than 1,000 private schools have signed up to participate in Texas’ new school choice program one month before applications open to families.
Families can begin applying Feb. 4 for Texas Education Freedom Accounts, or TEFA, which provide about $10,500 per eligible student to spend on private school tuition, tutoring and other approved educational expenses.
Students with disabilities can receive up to $30,000 annually, while homeschool students are capped at $2,000. The application window will close March 17.
Lone Star State lawmakers approved the $1 billion program last year, making it the largest day-one school choice program in the nation. The program is expected to serve about 90,000 students its first year.
