Julia Ainsley could hardly believe the contrast in Eagle Pass, Texas, from two years ago – when 2,000 illegal immigrants crossed into the United States in a single day.
“The last time I was in Eagle Pass was two years ago, almost to the date, and I saw more migrants crossing at a single point in one day than I had in, at that point, nine years of covering immigration,” Ainsley said in a video posted late last week. “Now, under President Trump’s policies, [Border Patrol] officers encounter just 20 migrants a day here.”
Migrants once cut through barbed wire and crossed the Rio Grande, “sometimes with parents holding their children on their backs,” but now that Trump has ended Biden’s “catch and release” policy, illegal immigrants are being detained and returned to Mexico –which also serves as a deterrent.
“You simply cannot cross through here anymore and claim asylum, no matter what your claim is,” Ainsley said.
