A North Carolina school superintendent defended giving kindergarteners access to a book that depicts men in bondage-style outfits kissing at a Pride parade.

State Rep. Brenden Jones, a Republican who chairs the House Oversight Committee, grilled Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Superintendent Rodney Trice on Thursday for keeping materials such as Grandad’s Pride in elementary school libraries.

Trice initially said, “I’m not sure what I’m looking at,” when Jones displayed an image from the book of two men in bondage-style gear, which led Jones to respond, “You’re not sure what you’re looking at, but you’re OK with kindergarteners looking at it?”

“I don’t understand what the challenge is,” Trice said. “I see a Pride flag. I see community. I see two couples who appear to be in a loving relationship. They’re not breaking any laws, they’re not hurting anyone, and that’s certainly something a child may see in their community.”

“Doctor, children are being subjected to this filth,” Jones replied. “Is this the hill you want to die on, the Democrats want to die on? Indoctrinating young children? … You’re on the wrong side of history.”

This was the second time Jones summoned Trice to testify over alleged violations of a parents’ rights bill that bans sexual content in grades K-4 and requires schools to notify parents of student name or pronoun changes.
