Jake Jarvis, owner of an excavating company, has been restoring properties free of charge in the year since Hurricane Helene decimated parts of western North Carolina and surrounding states.
Jarvis and his team work seven days a week on homes and businesses near Chimney Rock, restoring at least 300 properties so far. They don’t charge but accept donations.
“I just knew that it would be wrong to not help people that they really needed it,” he told a local reporter.
April Schick, who owns a shop Jarvis helped restore, said she’s “never met a man like him. That’s the kind of place I want to live, people that do things like that, people that do things for each other.”
