Newly released footage from inside an Oklahoma school captures the moment the principal tackles and disarms a gunman before the intruder could carry out his planned attack on April 7.
Pauls Valley High School Principal Kirk Moore rushed 20-year-old Victor Hawkins, who entered his former high school with a gun, as previously reported.
During the rush, Moore was shot in the leg but is expected to recover, according to multiple reports.
“I look forward to returning to work as soon as possible so that I may continue my life’s work educating the next generation of Oklahoma leaders,” Moore said in a social media statement. “Until then, my thoughts are with our outstanding students, safe today in the arms of their families and friends.”
Hawkins has been arrested and is being held in county jail on two counts of pointing a firearm, one count of shooting with intent to kill and two counts of unlawful carry. Hawkins told a judge he intended to shoot students, faculty and himself inside the school.
The Oklahoma shooting marks the fourth school shooting in the U.S. this month, and the 10th of 2026, according to Education Week.
In Turkey, where school shootings are rare, 10 people were killed in two separate incidents occurring two days apart, according to AP News.
