President Donald Trump honored two fallen soldiers of the Iowa National Guard and an American interpreter in a dignified transfer at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware Wednesday.
The solemn dignified transfer of remains honors those who sacrifice their lives for the service of their country, CBS News reports.
Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, 25, of Des Moines and Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, 29, of Marshalltown – both members of the 1st Squadron, 113th Cavalry Regiment – were killed Saturday in Syria, according to an announcement from Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.
“Their mission was in support of ongoing counter-ISIS/counter-terrorism operations in the region,” Gen. Steven Nordhaus, 30th chief of the National Guard Bureau, said in a tribute post on X Saturday.
An ISIS gunman ambushed and killed Tovar, Howard and U.S. civilian interpreter Ayad Mansoor Sakat, according to multiple reports.
Trump met privately with the families of the deceased before transfer. Other attendees included Hegseth, Iowa Sens. Joni Ernst and Chuck Grassley and Sen. Chris Coons, D-Delaware, CBS reports.
“Our hearts are with their families, loved ones and the Iowa National Guard during this time of profound sorrow,” Nordhaus said. “We honor their courage and sacrifice, and we will never forget them or their service.”
