Women’s rights advocate Riley Gaines is calling for blue states that defy federal rules on transgender athletes to face consequences, suggesting Maine and California should be made examples.

“Before we see drastic change, again specifically in these blue states, we need someone to be made an example of – whether it’s Maine or California,” Gaines told Fox News’ Dana Perino.

The Department of Justice is investigating both states for defying President Donald Trump’s executive order banning biological males from participating in women’s sports. The administration has warned it may withhold federal funding.

But Gaines said she wants more than threats.

“Enough with the warnings and saying we’re going to pull federal funds,” she said. “I believe to see real and lasting change we actually need to see these federal funds be pulled.”
