School choice “was once a fringe issue,” but after 15 years it is “mainstream policy,” said Erika Donalds, a leading school choice advocate, on the Katie Miller Podcast.

Donalds, who appeared with her husband, Florida Rep. Byron Donalds, who is running for governor, said people once did not want to discuss school choice, but “now I’m able to go on national television and talk about it very frequently.”

More than 1.5 million students are using school choice programs, with programs in 35 states. A new federal tax credit will take effect next year, although scholarships can only go to students in states that opt in. Parental empowerment is the goal.

“Parents are finding out that they actually do have options, whether that’s charter schools or education savings accounts or whatnot,” Donalds said last week. “We have 17 states with universal programs. We have the federal program now. So it’s actually become an industry and a real pursuit of fully parent-directed funding in education and a free market in education.”
