Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves has signed a bill to protect biological females in bathrooms, locker rooms and dormitories in public education buildings.
“The far-left radicals aren’t going to like it … but in Mississippi, we’re going to protect women’s spaces,” Reeves posted on X. “That’s why I am pleased to announce that this morning I signed the SAFER Act into law!
“It’s mind blowing that this is what Joe Biden’s America has come to. Having to pass common sense policies that protect women’s spaces was unimaginable just a few years ago. But here we are…”
Senate Bill 2753, called the Securing Areas for Females Effectively and Responsibly Act, requires any public education building to have bathrooms and changing facilities designated exclusively for females and males, or unisex spaces designed for individual use, “in order to maintain public safety, decency, decorum and privacy.”
Individuals will be allowed to enter only spaces that correspond with their sex assigned at birth, regardless of their gender identity. The new law allows either a private individual or the attorney general to sue anyone who violates the policy.
Opponents, such as the American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi, are calling the law “transphobic anti-privacy legislation,” claiming it will put transgender people at risk.
“SB 2753 is a direct threat to the privacy and security of all individuals accessing vulnerable spaces within our state,” ACLU of Mississippi posted on X.
Despite such backlash, Reeves said he’s not done fighting for the rights of girls and women in Mississippi.
“There’s no doubt that the left will continue to come up with more kooky ideas that harm biological women,” Reeves wrote on X. “And there’s no doubt that Mississippi will continue to push back on them. That’s because we have to – protecting girls and women from the left’s dangerous agenda is just too important to ignore.
“Today is a win for girls and women across our state, and I was proud to sign SB2753 into law. You have my word that as long as I’m governor, our state will do everything in its power to keep Mississippi’s daughters safe. Thank you to all of the girls and women across our state who stood up and made your voices heard! We are grateful for your efforts and proud of you!”
The law took effect immediately.
