The number of food stamp users fell below 40 million – a number not seen since 2020 –following a 3.3 million drop during the first year of the Trump administration.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins called it “incredible news,” telling Fox’s Maria Bartiromo Wednesday it’s “a real testament to this president’s leadership and vision that we have to protect the taxpayer. We have to ensure that every government program coming out of the federal government is doing what it is intended.”

President Donald Trump’s tough stance on fraud and combating illegal immigration led to the removal of people in the country illegally from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, which is commonly known as food stamps. Participation now stands at 39.5 million as of December.

Rollins said her department has also found 500,000 people who are “taking benefits more than once,” and 200,000 people “using dead people’s Social Security numbers” to scam the system.

Scrutiny continues in Minnesota, California and New York, which she called “ground zero for massive fraud,” but Trump’s efforts have “moved 3.3 million people off of food stamps, into work and into a better life of dignity,” she said.

Last year’s record-long government shutdown shed light on “a very broken program,” Rollins said, increasing reform efforts.

“We’re working on it, and I think we’re going to make great progress in the years to come,” she added.
