The U.S. women’s hockey team beat Canada 2-1 in overtime Thursday to win the gold medal at the Winter Olympics, held in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.
The U.S. and Canada are the only teams to have won gold since the sport was introduced at the 1998 Olympics and have met in every final.
Canada had won five of the seven contests, but the U.S. secured its third gold medal in the sport on a goal by Megan Keller in the extra time.
Team captain Hilary Knight also scored, becoming the career goals and points leader for an American in the Olympics, ESPN reported.
On the men’s side, the U.S. team has reached the semifinals and is guaranteed at least a bronze medal, its first Olympic medal since winning bronze in 2010.
It will play Slovakia Friday. Canada and Finland are the other semifinalists.
