An Oakland, California, elementary school is under fire after a racial slur appeared in its yearbook commemorating the school’s 100th anniversary, ABC7 reported.
The Montclair Elementary School yearbook included a photo from a 1940 school carnival, where contestants threw objects at the head of a black boy for prizes.
The photo and accompanying text included the N-word as part of the booth’s title.
The Oakland Unified School District said it was “shocked and disgusted” that the content was published.
School officials are offering full refunds for the yearbook, as well as stickers for families to cover the offensive article. The entire PTA yearbook committee has resigned, and the PTA historian, who proofread the yearbook, has also stepped down.
