The Thomas More Society has asked incoming President Donald Trump to pardon 21 pro-life advocates who were unjustly persecuted by the Biden administration.
In a letter sent days before Trump’s inauguration, the Catholic group pleaded its case.
“These peaceful pro-life Americans mistreated by Biden include grandparents, pastors, a Holocaust survivor, and a Catholic priest – all are selfless, sincere patriots,” the group explains. “We respectfully urge that all 21 of them detailed here are richly deserving of full and unconditional pardons.”
It claims the pro-lifers have been unjustly convicted and, in some cases, imprisoned for publicly opposing abortion.
“We urge President Trump to right the grievous wrongs of the Biden administration’s weaponization of the Department of Justice,” wrote Steve Crampton, senior counsel for the society. “These 21 peaceful pro-lifers, many of whom are currently imprisoned for bravely standing up for unborn life, are upstanding citizens and pillars of their communities.
“President Trump has the chance to remedy the harm done to them and their families, deliver on his campaign promises, and repair trust in our constitutional order.”
Biden’s administration charged and convicted pro-life advocates using two laws: the FACE Act and the KKK act.
The Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act of 1994 prohibits force, threats of force or “the intentional damage or destruction of a reproductive health care facility or a place of worship.”
However, it does not prohibit peaceful protest outside clinics, since such activities are protected as free speech.
The Civil Rights Act of 1870 – also called the First Ku Klux Klan Act – was written to enforce the Fifteenth Amendment and prevent violence against African-American citizens attempting to vote.
Thomas More claims the Biden administration misused both laws to target pro-life advocates.
“Using this anti-Klan law against peaceful pro-life Americans is an outrageous affront to justice and tarnishes the legacy of our own Civil Rights Movement, equating mere peaceful civil rights protest with deadly racist violence,” the letter reads.
Furthermore, it argues the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision of 2022, which overturned Roe v. Wade, “eroded the principal stated purpose of Congress’ enactment of the FACE Act, namely, to protect the purported constitutional right to abortion access. But Dobbs eclipsed that right as non-existent.”
Nevertheless, Biden’s team used flimsy legal arguments to hunt peaceful protesters while simultaneously overlooking actual violence against churches and pro-life centers.
The letter explained how the Biden DOJ “refused to prosecute almost any of the more than 170 incidents of violence against pro-life pregnancy centers and churches nationwide in the wake of the leak of the Dobbs decision, even though pregnancy centers and churches are supposed to be protected under FACE.”
It further claims pro-lifers were denied fair trials and given inflated sentences.
Trump, a Republican, has already signaled his support for the embattled pro-lifers, saying he’d review the cases of unjustly persecuted “political prisoners” and that the pro-life advocates were “convicted on outrageous charges.”
Now, the Society is urging him to follow through on his campaign promises.
“We are hopeful that the second Trump administration will spell a new day for pro-life advocates who have faced FBI raids, federal prosecutions, and severe punishment for peacefully and courageously witnessing for life,” concluded Peter Breen, its executive vice president.
“President Trump has a golden opportunity to not only stop the lawfare against peaceful pro-lifers, but to also undo some of the unprecedented damage of the Biden administration.”
