(Daily Caller News Foundation) – Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson of Chicago called police to clear out city residents after a public forum during a Monday city council meeting became chaotic when attendees protested budget changes that would allocate more funding for illegal immigrants.
The Chicago city council voted to pass a budget proposed by Johnson after six weeks of negotiations only after police removed the vocal residents during a temporary recess, Fox News reported. Residents ripped city officials for seeking a $40 million loan as part of the city budget.
“He wants to pull a $40 million line of credit and put the city in even more debt,” one city resident said during a public comment period. “It’s your fault, because you gave half of the money to illegals.”
State and city officials have spent hundreds of millions of dollars to provide housing, clothes and food to more than 35,000 migrants who were transported to the Windy City, according to an earlier Fox News report.
“You caused all this money to go to illegal immigrants,” another resident told Johnson and the city council. “Anything that you all pass is not genuine.”
Protests against the housing of migrants broke out in Chicago, where black residents took legal action to prevent Chicago from using a closed-down high school and two other locations on the South Side of the city as shelters in 2023, according to ABC7Chicago.com.
Many illegal immigrants have made their way to cities like Chicago and New York City, many of whom were bussed to there by border state governors. Republican Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas began busing migrants to so-called “sanctuary” cities in 2022 along with then-Republican Gov. Doug Ducey of Arizona to alleviate strain on border communities.
