Legendary sports broadcaster Bob Costas defended the International Olympic Committee’s decision to ban biological males from women’s sports, calling it “common sense.”
“If Caitlin Clark could play in the NBA, everybody would applaud it,” he told CNN’s Alex Michaelson on Thursday. “That’d be an incredible thing.
“But if the last guy on the bench of an NBA team went to the WNBA and started averaging 40 points a game, everyone would know that is BS.”
Costas, who covered the Olympics for NBC from 1988 to 2016, called Title IX “one of the truly progressive pieces of legislation in the best sense of the word progressive” for opening opportunities for girls to play sports.
But he criticized Penn swimmer William “Lia” Thomas, who was ranked 472nd competing against men but began to score near the top after “transitioning” to a woman and competing in their events.
“If that’s what the person wants to do, that person should be treated with dignity and respect, but there ought to be common sense, and common sense is not transphobic.”
