Rep. Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana, won reelection as House Speaker on Friday after two Republicans changed their votes in his favor.
Reps. Ralph Norman, R-South Carolina, and Keith Self, R-Texas, flipped their vote in support of Johnson, who was initially two votes shy of reelection.
In the final tally, Johnson received 218 votes, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-New York, received 215, and Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minnesota, received one.
The razor thin margin was expected in the lead up, even despite President-elect Donald Trump’s support of Johnson’s candidacy.
In a post on TruthSocial, Trump congratulated Johnson:
“Congratulations to Speaker Mike Johnson for receiving an unprecedented Vote of Confidence in Congress. Mike will be a Great Speaker, and our Country will be the beneficiary. The People of America have waited four years for Common Sense, Strength, and Leadership. They’ll get it now, and America will be greater than ever before!”
