Shooting at Seattle high school leaves one student dead, suspect in custody

A student died after a shooting at a North Seattle high school Tuesday morning.

A suspect was arrested on a city bus an hour after the incident, which took place at Ingraham High School, according to the Seattle Police Department, which called it a targeted attack.

Police received reports of a shooting at 9:55 a.m. and officers arrived soon after to find one victim as they worked to secure the school.

At 11:00 a.m., the department announced the school was secured and it was still searching for the suspect, “believed to have fled the campus.” 

Ten minutes later, police reported one person was arrested and the investigation was ongoing.  

Around 11:30 a.m., the school announced reunification would begin in which parents could pick up their children.  

“We in the city joined a long list of cities this year that have had school shootings,” Seattle Police Chief Adrian Diaz said, according to the Seattle Times. 

“You hear about it in the news all the time,” one parent told the Times. “Maybe it’s cliche but it’s different when it happens to you.” 

Another parent, Leanna Sparks, told the Times she received a text from her freshman about hearing gun shots. 

“It’s like my worst nightmare come true,” she said, adding she is now considering homeschooling her children.

Police had not yet identified the suspect or the victim Tuesday evening.
