President Donald Trump’s support for an idea to give new moms $5,000 as part of an effort to raise the nation’s falling birth rate has left some liberals fuming.
“Sounds like a good idea to me,” Trump told reporters at the White House Tuesday when asked about giving cash bonuses to new mothers.
The proposal is one of a host of things the Trump administration is considering to increase the number of children being born, some of which The New York Times reported Monday.
Ideas include helping women track their menstrual cycles to know when they are ovulating and reserving a certain number of elite Fulbright Scholarships for people who are married or have kids.
The initiatives reflect Trump’s focus on cultural and economic policies to encourage family growth, a priority for his administration.
As of 2025, the fertility rate, or total number of children the average woman will birth, stood at 1.62 – well below the 2.1 needed to keep the population steady. Unless the tide turns, the United States will lose population, except for immigrants coming here each year.
Trump and Vice President JD Vance have declared themselves strong supporters of raising the birth rate, with Vance saying, “I want more babies in the United States of America!” at a pro-life rally in March, adding that the government should help “make it easier for young moms and dads to afford to have kids.”
Trump has echoed the same sentiment, calling being a parent “the ultimate joy in life.”
Earlier in his term, he signed an executive order for the federal government to study how it can increase access to in vitro fertilization or IVF, a treatment that typically costs more than $20,000. That report is due in mid-May.
But not everyone liked Trump’s support of the “baby bonus” for new moms.
Liberals on The View panned Trump as being insensitive and unaware of how much it costs to raise a child, mocking the $5,000 as insignificant, especially because the money would be taxable.
“So, as birth rates continue to decline in America, the White House is looking into offering $5,000 cash bonuses, expanded access to IVF, along with other incentives to women to have more babies,” said co-host Whoopi Goldberg.
“And I am incredibly insulted by this because clearly they don’t know how women’s bodies work, and they don’t know what it costs to raise a child or just have a child. $5,000? I don’t know what $5,000 is supposed to do.
“And it’s not even $5,000 because you have to cut it in half because you have to pay taxes on it,” she added. “So, they’re offering you $2,500 to have a baby? Now, don’t forget about all the stuff they’ve cut.”
Goldberg was indicating that she pays 50% tax on her estimated $8 million salary at The View, something far out of reach for most Americans. The U.S. tax rate is progressive, meaning those with lower incomes would pay little-to-no tax on the money.
And even if the funds are taxed, women currently don’t receive anything from the government for having a baby, other than the child tax credit, which has existed for years. Goldberg also did not address the need to raise the birth rate.
But Trump never said the money would cover all of a woman’s expenses or the cost of raising a child. The bonus money is similar to a program in Hungary that is seeking to incentivize new parents and raise the birth rate, something many view as essential for the survival of Western civilization.
The criticism reflects how for some, anything Trump does is wrong. Whether he makes a comment or expresses support for a policy, even one that isn’t fully developed, hardcore leftists will instantly find fault with it.
But what do rank-and-file moms or prospective moms think of the baby money? They’re likely more similar to Trump’s view than to a knee-jerk liberal millionaire in New York City.
Goldberg showed her real cards by stating she wants more money from the federal government for herself.
“I will say this, I paid in my money. I want my money back from Social Security. I’m sorry,” she said.
But Social Security is in peril in part because of the declining birth rate, which has dropped substantially since abortion was legalized 50 years ago – another leftist priority.
Moments like this help show who’s really pro-family, pro-women and pro-child – and who’s out to enrich themselves while you, and the nation, suffer.
Misery loves company. Goldberg may be rich but she doesn’t seem happy. In contrast, Trump often has a smile on his face, especially when he’s around children and families.
Americans voted for the man who wants to restore our nation. Let the baby cash come!
