A Minnesota elementary school plans to hold a dance party to celebrate Pride Month.

The event at Hiawatha Elementary School in Minneapolis will feature “festival dance outfits,” face paint and loud pop music in a darkened gym on June 5, Alpha News reports

Called “Glow Up Get Down,” the rave-style party is organized for students in grades K-5 and attendance is optional.

“This dance party has been a dream in the making for two years and we are ecstatic that the dream is manifesting,” school principal Mercedes Walker wrote in an email to parents.

Walker also encouraged students to bring their “GLBTQI friends and family.”

The school will play songs by Madonna, Chappell Roan, Young MC and Dua Lipa at the event.

Social media users expressed their frustrations over the school’s decision to host the party, the report said.

“Totally inappropriate and disgusting along with disturbing – someone with common sense in administration or on the board needs to start saying ‘NO’! There are plenty of other ways to celebrate and have a fun theme. I’d be removing my kids,” a woman named Bonnie Bisek Belfiori wrote on Facebook.

“Is nobody outraged by this????? What in the world are these people thinking?” another Facebook user, Jerry Norberg, posted. “No parent in there (sic) right mind would bring their child to this. This is NOT what schools are responsible for…. ABC’s… reading, writing and arithmetic is the SOLE function. Parents should take care of the rest!”

“Why is sexuality the most important aspect of education these days?” an X user wrote. “Sick and perverted government schools are no longer hiding their agendas.”

When reached for comment, Principal Walker told Alpha News to direct all media inquiries to the Minneapolis Public Schools office, which in turn said Walker should be contacted directly.

“Hiawatha school parents are encouraged to contact the school principal [Mercedes Walker] or PTO directly with questions about this optional after-school community event,” the district spokesman wrote.
