Despite New York City Public Schools spending “far and away” the most per student in the country, the system is rife with inefficiencies and produces subpar results, one expert said Monday.
Speaking on It’s a Numbers Game with Ryan Girdusky, Marc Porter Magee, CEO and founder of pro-school choice group FiftyCAN, said parents underestimate “by more than $10,000” how much the school system spends, “so they’re not seeing it in the classroom.”
“I think this is the great risk of increased spending, that you can increase spending and never see the difference in terms of kids,” Magee said. “They don’t get more tutoring, they don’t get more extracurriculars, they don’t get better instruction. And that is, I think, New York is a real cautionary tale of what happens when you increase spending without any other performance.”
Girdusky agreed, saying he views New York City schools as “essentially a jobs program for adults,” while criticizing waste, inefficiency and poor test scores.
