A group of 22 Sri Lankan monks were detained Sunday after returning from a trip to Thailand with a record 242 pounds of a powerful form of cannabis.

“Each carried about five kilos of the narcotic concealed within false walls in their luggage,” a Sri Lanka Customs spokesman said of the substance, known as Kush, CBS News reported.

Other recent incidents involving Buddhist monks and drugs include a 2022 bust in Thailand that led to all monks at one temple being defrocked after testing positive for methamphetamine, and a 2017 arrest in Myanmar involving more than 4 million meth pills and cash.
