Virginia Lt. Gov. Ghazala Hashmi was sworn in Saturday with her hand on the Quran, becoming the second prominent official to do so this year.

Earlier this month, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a Muslim who was born in Uganda, took the oath of office using three Qurans. He is a self-professed democratic socialist.

Hashmi, a Democrat, was born in India and moved to America at age 4. She was the first Muslim and first South Asian American to serve in Virginia’s Senate and now serves as lieutenant governor.

Muslims made up about 1% of the U.S. population in the 2020 census but are gaining political influence.

Several X commentators noted the trend is similar to how Muslims ascended in the United Kingdom.
